Ngagyur Shedup Children’s Home

Tibet is abound with natural beauty with its vast grassy plateau surrounded by breathtakingly high mountain ranges.  It is also one of the most mystical and spiritually holy places in the world with its long history of Buddhism.  But being one of the most isolated regions on earth with harsh climate changes, it is also one of the poorest places in the world.  It is due to poverty that we find many homeless children here.  Children are often abandoned or orphaned due to social issues or impoverished circumstances.

Ngagyur Shedup Children’s Home (NSCH) is a charitable entity that provides a home, food and education for the abandoned, homeless and deprived children.

NSCH provides these children with not only a home but also education at an attached school.  These children are given love and care in a family-like environment and nurtured so that they will grow up with a normal life and become responsible adults.  NSCH rescues them from fear and depravity and gives them hope for a better life and future.

NSCH was completed in September 2008.  Timber was the major construction material used.  Due to limited resources and high costs (transportation of materials to isolated areas is very costly), only 16 bedrooms and 1 classroom was built.  64 children from the ages of 7-14 were admitted under the care of two teachers.  Since then more children have come and the home has started accepting girls as well.

The Objectives of NSCH

To provide food and housing in a secure and nurturing home environment.

  1. To provide quality education that emphasizes on ethical and spiritual development and academic achievement.
  2. To prevent them from engaging in anti-social activities and promote ethical values, human potential and sense of responsibility towards society and environment.
  3. To educate the children and community about health concerns and offer adequate medical care.

Currently there are 64 children receiving care and monastic education in NSCH. The curriculum includes traditional Buddhist studies as well as language classes in Tibetan, Chinese and English, mathematics and art.

In order to sustain the daily life of the children, our doors are always open to organizations and individuals who are willing to help us and provide us with aid of any kind, be it financial support or volunteer work or advice in areas of expertise. Without the contribution from various sectors, the project is unable to stand by itself.  We are appealing to you to lend a helping hand to the people of Tibet.

How Can You Help the Children?

Sponsoring a child is an exceptionally wonderful way of helping. A donation of US$1 per day or USD$360 per year will mean that a deserving child will be benefiting from your generosity.

To be kind to those who have come from afar, to those who have been ill for a long time, or to our parents in their old age, is equivalent to meditating on emptiness of which compassion is the very essence. ~ Jowo Atisha ~

Alternatively, you can also help by donating to one of the following:

  • General Donation: Donations will support the day to day running of the school and the orphanage including all learning materials and resources, food and medicine as well as warm undergarments for the children or where the need is most urgent.
  • Building Fund: Donations will be directed towards the extension and improvement of current facilities to allow new enrollments.
